What is Cranial Osteopathy?
Much of the tension we experience in everyday life comes from the adaptations our bodies have made to things that have happened to us. For example, accidents, illnesses and injuries often leave us with unresolved stresses and strains. Our bodies have an amazing ability to compensate and many issues will resolve on their own in time. But, if these issues don’t resolve, the tension mounts up and it can start to compromise our capacity to stay well. This then leads to us feeling pain, stiffness or discomfort in different areas of our body.
Cranial osteopaths are experts at identifying the unresolved issues underlying your symptoms. They can help you let go of tension and support your body to find its way back into balance. This can make things more comfortable and prevent problems in the future. It is a specialised field within osteopathy that is studied predominantly at post-graduate level. Cranial osteopaths use their hands to identify areas of tension or imbalance in the body and try to make sense of where it’s come from, what impact it’s having and what kind of support it needs to resolve. The gentle, supportive nature of this type of approach is particularly suitable in the treatment of babies, children and women during pregnancy. It is also extremely useful in very painful conditions such as acute low back or neck pain.
What does Cranial treatment Feel Like?
During the treatment, the Osteopath will hold different parts of your body to support them to rebalance. Despite its name, this approach can be applied to the whole body, not just the head.
Patients may be aware of different sensations, such as gentle pressure or warmth. Most become deeply relaxed, and feel that tension is gradually being eased out of their body. For some people, the treatment may feel so gentle that they report little sensation at the time, but may feedback that they feel significantly better afterwards.
As well as an improvement in symptoms, patients often report increased levels of energy, better sleep patterns, and an enhanced sense of overall well being.
